Balance the breath, balance the mind, balance the body

ree

When I first started practicing a yoga, a teacher shared some great advice with me, one of which was that our ability to balance is going to vary daily. She didn't explain more than this and at that time it was enough.

I now understand the profound role the breath plays in balance. Our breath is closely tied to the nervous system, when we feel frazzled, the breath often becomes shallow and rapid, which makes it harder to find steadiness physically and mentally. When the breath flows smoothly and deeply, it creates a sense of calm and also supports the core. You can think of the ribcage and pelvis as playing a kind of game of catch. On the inhale, the ribcage expands and the diaphragm descends, which gently creates pressure through the abdominal cavity. The pelvic floor responds by also yielding and expanding. Then, on the exhale, there’s a natural rebound: the diaphragm rises, the ribcage softens, and the pelvic floor and deep core muscles gently re-engage. This subtle interplay creates a supportive rhythm in the body that makes balance more accessible and sustainable.

And the great thing is is that when we wobble we're strengthening the core muscles and giving our brain important spacial feedback.

The thing is is that's I've always taken the advice given to me on the mat off the mat. Having a frazzled day? Re centre, re connect with your breath. Having a wobble? Could be some important feedback in there? So I invite you to have a little balance today
